The United States imports more than 60 percent of the petroleum it uses annually, 10 percent of which is used in the production of plastics and materials for a diverse range of industries and applications. Petroleum-based high-density foams (250-300 kg/m~3) are implemented in an extensive number of high-value commercial products, serving as lightweight structural cores in vehicle panels and wind turbine blades.
