Access to knowledge and relevant information is critical to the success of modern businesses. The ability to grow a company's knowledge base and to deliver it at the time and place required is an important factor in achieving competitive advantage, David Kirkwood explains. The application of knowledge assets within a Knowledge Asset Management System (KAMS) will create financial benefit to an industrial organisation. Rather than focus on the theory of KM, the concept of Return on Knowledge (ROK) focuses upon the real returns from the implementation and exploitation of existing and future knowledge assets. A knowledge asset can be defined as a piece of information, either static or dynamic, that contains some data or information that imparts some knowledge irrespective of size or nature.
