The effect of surface treatment of carbon black (CB) by the ionic liquid AMIC on mechanical, rheological and dielectric properties of elastomers is investigated. By applying static gas adsorption techniques, the site energy distribution function of the modified and unmodified CB is evaluated. The data indicate a strong adsorption of AMIC at the CB surface. This affects the flocculation behaviour of CB in SBR melts, which is monitored by combined rheological and dielectric investigations. For the vulcanized compounds lower stress values are observed indicating that the surface modification by AMIC leads to a decreased polymer-filler coupling. The Dynamic Flocculation Model is used to calculate polymer-and filler-specific material parameters from cyclic stress strain measurements.
