Circovirus infections in budgerigars - case reports of a complex disease [German]

Circovirus (PBFDV)-infections have been found in two breeding flocks of budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus f. dom.). The nestlings of both breeding flocks developed peracute systemic diseases with high mortality rates and acute diseases of juvenile birds, that were characterised by feather abnormalities. In both cases, an increased occurrence of PBFD late in the breeding season has been documented and in one case a remarkable high mortality of adult birds has been found. Additionally, a different case of circovirus infections in budgerigars of a private owner is reported. In this case, feather problems did not occur, but clinical features suggest a circovirus-induced immunodeficiency and concurrent secondary infections.
