Balance between matrix metalloproteinases and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases

We thank Del Porto et al. [1] for their valuable comments on our letter to the editor [2]. Expression of matrix metallopro-teinases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs) is increased in patients with aortic aneurysms and dissections, and an imbalance between them is regarded as an underlying pathomechanism [3]. A 1:1 molecular ratio between MMPs and TIMPs maintains the structural integrity of the aorta by regulating the degradation and synthesis of the extracellular matrix [3,4].
