Salt Lake Racing was in its infancy back in the 1930's. Some of the biggest names in racing were busy developing new ways to go faster and faster, and then after World War II street racing and Salt Lake Racing grew more rapidly. A safe, conveniently located place for people to get together and race was desperately needed, and so with help from the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), the quarter mile drag strip was born. The cars quickly evolved from hopped-up road cars to highly engineered, purpose built top fuel monsters capable of reaching speeds of 330 MPH (531 KPH) in less than 3.8 seconds. A top fuel dragster can accelerate from 0 to 100 MPH (160 km/h) in as little as 0.7 seconds, subjecting drivers to an average force of about 4g (g-force) during the race. For comparison, astronauts during a space shuttle launch are subjected to about 3g.
