For drawings see M.E. 4370, 29 January 2010. If you haven't got a tapping and staking tool, an alternative is to use the drilling machine. Without moving the workpiece, remove the drill bit and put a 'second cut' ME1/4in. ×40 tap into the chuck. Release the drive belt so that the chuck rotates freely. It might also be an idea to unplug the machine. I have made up a set of capstan bars (photo 13) which enable me to use the drill chuck in the manner described as an accurate and square tapping tool. This reduces the risk of misalignment and tap breakage, I suggest you do the same; it could save you both time and temper.
