A year or so ago I was perusing through Roger Backhouse's Engineer's Day Out in Model Engineer (Vol. 207, No. 4416) and came across a picture of Derwent, the Timothy Hackworth locomotive built in 1845 and beautifully preserved in the North Station Museum at Darlington. At the time I was considering my next project and, having built several more modern engines, the prospect of tackling a real oldie appealed. Furthermore, as there were no existing plans and few photos, I would have to start from scratch and develop a design myself. I enjoy that kind of challenge!
