Helping Dad make a True Vertical Mill Engine: Part 8

This elementary engine build comes from the same stable as my Helping Dad make a Simple Mill Engine that was serialised in Model Engineer Volume 211, No. 4460, 12-25th July 2013. For anyone here for the first time, the objective is to complete a simple, low cost project that that can be made in a modestly equipped workshop with basic tooling. The intention is to stimulate further interest in pursuing this most rewarding hobby. Before going on and finishing the engine off it's now time to put it together for a trial run. You will need to make a temporary base - any old bit of suitable chipboard will do - and a temporary air feed. Slowly and methodically assemble the parts, chasing out any tight spots. What you want is an engine that will turn over easily by hand. Pack the valve glands with graphite yarn or PTFE plumber's tape (don't pack them too tight) and use gasket sealant on the cylinder end covers and valve chest; again, be sparing with this as too much will just gum up the works.
