Representatives from various countries, present at the IEC Spring Meetings in London, UK, warned the egg industry to be prepared for new actions of welfarists. At the meeting they reported of their current situations with regards to poultry welfare, salmonella control, production and several other issues. At the IEC meeting, Peter Kemp, representing the UK egg industry explained that UK producers had experienced a difficult year in 1994, with low prices resulting from surpluses. Retail demand was disappointing and is currently below that of this time last year. Animal welfare was an ongoing issue. As the lobbyists are gearing up to tackle other classes of stock, he felt the industry needed to have its defences in place, "Otherwise we could face a crisis comparable to the Edwina Currie situation," he said.
