Looking long term

Major extractive opportunities unfolding in Mozambique look set to transform livelihoods in one of the world's poorest countries. These opportunities remain some of the most compelling in East Africa, provided that the government is able to ensure sufficient political stability for long-term investments. Given that the country is entering a preelection period, the government can be expected to highlight the need to fund social programmes with revenue from the extractives sector, highlighting ongoing links between development goals and natural resource revenues.
