Land acquisition hurdles hit steel majors' projects

According to the government's projections, the country's steel production is expected to go up to 124 million tonne by 2012 and to 150 million tonne by 2015. But the ambitious big ticket investment plans drawn up by domestic public and private sector steel majors as well as foreign steel giants are yet to take off the ground for one reason or another raising doubts of the steel capacity doubling in three years. They are not prepared to take risks with huge investments of 50,000 crore rupees and above to set up steel mill of 12 million tonne capacity till they have secured the required land without antagonising the displaced people, obtained raw material linkages to iron ore and coal mines and found logistical support by way of infrastructure facilities.
