Q1 gold demand dips 16 percent as jewellery demand falls: WGC report

Demand for gold during the first quarter of this year was 16 per cent lower than demand for the metal in the first quarter of 2005, primarily as a result of a significant fall in jewellery demand in Asia and the Middle East as a result of volatile prices, according to the World Gold Council (WGC). Total consumption of gold for January-March came in at 835 tonnes, down from 989.8 tonnes for the corresponding period last year, as jewellery consumption fell 22 per cent, the WGC said.
