In the last four years, China has become a significant driving force for the global TiO_2 pigment industry. China is now the second largest importer of titanium feedstocks (by tonnes of product) behind the US, it has been the world's largest importer of TiO_2 pigment since 2003, and is a major consumer of titanium metal and ferro-titanium scrap. However, the titanium industry in China is not without its challenges. Despite its wealth of mineral resources, China has insufficient domestic titanium feedstock production to meet its requirements, and the TiO_2 pigment industry in general suffers from poor quality issues. The TiO_2 industry, after years of operating under the environmental radar, is now coming under closer scrutiny from the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) and local authorities.
