Conventional economic wisdom often referred to in this journal is that the quickest way to eradicate a global surplus in an agricultural market is an extreme weather event. This is even more so the case in markets such as cocoa and coffee where few origins account for the lion's share of global output. While the concentration of supply in coffee is not anywhere close to the situation in cocoa where just three origins (Ivory Coast, Ghana and Indonesia) account for about 70% of world production, Brazil has a dominant position in coffee as it accounts for about a third of the world's total output and more than half of its arabica. ,
