Arabica coffee prices have recorded sharp gains in the period under review as investors jumped into the market on concerns that a prolonged drought in top grower Brazil might reduce the upcoming 2014/15 crop sharply, potentially leading to a global deficit. While it is still too early to tell what the actual extent of the damage is and in how far the current light showers can mitigate some of the effects, prices were pushed up by about a quarter between February 3 and February 19 to the highest settlement in 13 months before profit-taking took the market a tad lower again.
