It has been some time now since containerization entered inot its fourth generation. In recent years, demands for imporvements in handling efficiency, ease of operation and a comfortable working environment have been growing in regard to quayside container cranes. To help meet these demands, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), Hiro-shima Machinery Works, delivered five highly automated quayside container cranes to the Kobe Port Development Corporation in April, 1994, and three cranes to the Yokohama Port Development Corporation in September, 1994, The outline and features of the cranes are introduced elbow (Fig.1). The crane uses an electric anti-sway device in lieu of a mechanical one and has an independent cab which moves independently from the trolley with the conventional cab. The operator can operate the crane semi-automatically in a comfortable environment that is separated from trolley movement.
