Worsham Quarry refusal

An application by Taylors Transport Ltd to extend the existing limestone quarry at Worsham near Asthall was refused by Oxfordshire CC in July. The existing quarry lies within the Cotswolds AONB. The proposed extension comprised 3.5 ha of agricultural land to the west of the existing quarry which covers 8 ha. The permitted depth of the quarry (limited by means of a legal agreement in December 2000) is 107m AOD. It was proposed to extract limestone to provide aggregates and some block stone (20 percent of the total). If extracted to 107m AOD there is about 300,000t of saleable reserve remaining in the quarry. The extension area would yield about 750,000t of limestone. However, the applicant subsequently revised the working scheme to quarry to 110m AOD; the reserve would be reduced to 275,000 of saleable reserve in the existing quarry and reserves in the extension area would be 600,000t. The quarry could be worked out in 5-6 years (2008). The restoration using existing quarry waste and imported waste would take 13 years and should be completed by 2015.
