A proposal by Hanson Aggregates to extract some 80,000t of sand from an extension to the south east of Town Farm Quarry, Norley, from a 1.6 ha site which included the installation of a new haul road north of a Ministry of Defence pipeline to allow 190,000t of permitted sand reserves to be extracted, was approved by Cheshire CC in May, subject to the Secretary of State not calling in the application. The sand was being blended from two working areas on the site to produce concreting sand but the area supplying coarser sand was nearing depletion. The haul road was needed to allow permitted reserves to be used from an existing part of the quarry which would otherwise remain sterile. The phased working of the quarry, including the relocation of the processing plant along with the restoration of the site would be revised and an extension of time to permit the extraction of sand to continue from March 2003 until March 2005 was also proposed. Although part of the site was outside the Area of Search for construction sand, the proposal would not cause demonstrable harm to the local environment or to the Green Belt. There were no objections from statutory consultees and only two letters of objection from nearby residents.
