SouthernEra has completed a resource estimate for three newly-acquired platinum group metals (PGM) properties located adjacent to the 70.4 percent-owned Messina project (MJ, August 16, p.118). The new ground, granted to the company and its 'black empowerment' partner, Mvelaphanda Resources Ltd, is positioned in the gap between the first (Voorspoed) and second (Doornvlei) phase of Messina, and is collectively known as the Dwaalkop properties. SouthernEra estimates that these properties contain indicated resources within the UG2 reef of 14.65 Mt at an average grade of 6.74 g/t 5PGM (Pt+Pd+Rh+Ir+Ru) +Au. Inferred resources are estimated at 29.78 Mt at 4.88 g/t 5PGM+Au, within the Merensky and UG2 reefs. The grade for 5PGM+Au was arrived at by adjusting the assayed grade for Pt+Pd+Rh+Au, based on information from the adjacent Doornvlei and Voorspoed properties, and optimised for expected stoping widths. The Pt:Pd ratio is 1.78:1 in the Merensky, and 1.1:1 in the UG2 reef.
