摘要

Elliot Lake in Northern Ontario was born in the mid 1950s in response to the demand for uranium. At one point a thriving town with 13 operating mines in the area. The last operating mine closed in 1996 and the once booming economy has been successfully transformed. The mines, operated by Denison Mines Ltd and Rio Algom Ltd, have been successfully decommissioned and the minesite reclamation has been hailed as setting new worldwide standards in the completion of one of the largest and most technically challenging projects of its kind. The mining camp was once fated to be another example of the cradle-to-grave cycle of a one-industry ghost town.
