The Global Dialogue or Governments on Mining/Metals arid Sustainable Development is currently being established. It is one of a number of non negotiated Type II Partnership Initiatives aimed at implementing Agenda 21 that forms an important outcome of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) held in Johannesburg, in 2002. They supplement the commitments agreed to by governments through the inter-governmental process. It is an initiative of national governments with an interest in mining and metals. It is specifically designed to fulfil the priorities for the mining, minerals and metals sector as identified by the governments in their Plan of Implementation contained within the Report of the WSSD. Paragraph 46 of the plan identifies a number of priorities for the sector. This partnership will also help address the five key areas identified for the summit, particularly water, health, agriculture and biodiversity as they may relate to the sector.
