This Business Ratio report focuses on the leading 103 companies operating in the mining and quarrying industry. At the time of publication two companies had not filed accounts in the 04/05 period and have consequently been omitted from the Report's totals and averages. A further 19 companies have filed accounts subsequent to the cut-off date and these are presented in the 05/06 Recently Filed Accounts column of the Performance League Tables and relevant Company Profiles, but are not used in any of the analysis. The report is divided into two subsectors, each profiling companies with different key interests. The breakdown of subsectors is shown below. The report analyses company and industry performance over the three years up to 7~(th) August 2005. During this period, the average company has seen sales increase by 12.4 percent, from 80.5 million pounds in 2002/03 to 90.5 million pounds in 2004/05. Pre-tax profits rose by 9.5 percent, from 7.1 million pounds in the first year of analysis to 7.8 million pounds in the final year. The number of employees at the average company increased by 37 to stand at 529 in 2004/05. The mining and quarrying industry has seen a reasonably stable three years with some very minor fluctuations in the ratio areas analysed. The majority of ratios remained positive by the end of the 2004/05 period.
