More extraction set for Banks Mining

Newcastle City Council planners have recommend approval of plans for additional extraction at a large surface mine. Banks Mining identified an additional 14-hectare area at the Brenkley Lane pit in the north of Newcastle and wants to mine more than 500,000 further tonnes of coal. Last September Banks submitted a planning application for the project to Northumberland County Council and Newcastle City Council because the site straddles their respective areas.
