Former BHP chief heads world's biggest aluminium conglomerate

RUSAL, the world's third largest aluminium producer, SUAL Group, one of the world's top 10 aluminium producers, and Swiss group Glencore International AG plan to form the world's largest aluminium and alumina producer. The three companies announced on October 9 that they had signed an agreement to create the United Company RUSAL by merging their respective aluminium and alumina assets. Its chairman would be the former head of BHP Billiton, Mr Brian Gilbertson. It would employ more than 110,000 people in 17 countries on five continents. The annual volume of production would be approximately 4 million tonnes of aluminium and 11 million tonnes of alumina. The company would account for approximately 12.5 per cent of global aluminium and 16 per cent of global alumina production. The combined company would own bauxite mining, alumina refinery, aluminium smelting and foil production facilities.
