The Minerals of Halls Ridge and Plumbago-Puzzle Mountain

Halls Ridge, Newry, Maine was named for Henry C. Hall who first found watermelon tourmaline exposed at the surface of the current Dunton Pegmatite in 1898 (watermelon tourmaline was not actually named until 1910). The number of minerals at the Newry quarries is about 116 and an additional 7 species are found in the adjacent host rocks, but the latter do not seem to be present in specimens actually dug from a quarry or prospect. Of course, the list includes whatever species have actually been observed from the specific quarry and, therefore, the various minerals came from several rock types, although almost all species are from granite pegmatite. Many additional names have been proposed for minerals discovered at Newry, but they have been found to be misidentified or are no longer valid species.
