More on Strunz: In Memoriam-Professor Dr. Hugo Strunz

Prof. Dr. Hugo Strunz, honorary member of the VFMG (Society of Friends of Minerals and Geology), died April 19, 2006 in Unterwoessen at the age of 96. With his death the VFMG lost one of its most prominent members. Hugo Strunz was born February 24, 1910 in Weiden, Upper Palatine and attended elementary and secondary schools there until 1926. Later, in 1929 in Regensburg, Bavaria he received his diploma in higher education (Abitur) and enrolled in Munich to study mineralogy. Hugo Strunz finished his studies 1933 at the Ludwig-Maximilians University and 1935 at the Technische Hochschule Munich. Prof. Paul Ramdohr invited Strunz 1937 as science assistant to Berlin at the Friedrich-Wilhelm University. In 1938 followed the inauguration (Habilitation) and 1943 promotion to curator of the Mineralogische Staatssammlung at the Museum for Naturkunde. Hugo Strunz was a professor from 1951 to 1978 and (until 1972) director of the Institute for Mineralogy and Crystallography at the Technische Universitaet Berlin, now Institute for Applied Geosciences. He was the very first mineralogy professor after the foundation of the TU-Berlin in 1946.
