Motor Industry Magazine editor Tim Kiek reprises one of the industry's longest running debates: should there be a parts quality standard? Before assuming editorship of MIM, I presided over a magazine targeted at aftermarket professionals working in distribution. During my tenure at this title one issue raised its head more than any other. The issue in question was parts quality: in particular whether there should be more efforts to implement some form of standard. The debate was passionate, vociferous and incredibly complex: involving parties with many different agendas. The intricacies of the case for and against are if anything exacerbated when the debate is broadened to encompass not just the aftermarket, but the wider industry: perhaps most pertinently vehicle manufacturers. Before I embark on the main thrust of the arguments for and against a parts standard and speak to a variety industry figures to gather their opinions, it is important to set the context for the debate.
