In July 2011, a level 3 bio-containment lab, funded by M4M in 2008-09, became operational after passing a series of rigorous tests and safety checks. This lab enables researchers to study contagious and life-threatening illnesses, such as tuberculosis and the avian influenza, allowing for an effective translation of knowledge from patients to the lab and back to the clinical setting. Also in 2011, M4M funds helped to complete the acquisition of a world-class magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) unit at BC Children's Hospital.
