About the Magazine...

Several comments about the current magazine (July/Aug. 1996). Let me start with a "thank you" for running the current address of Doug Ball '43. He was a classmate; we shared the experience of Prof. Douglas's penthouse, trained together at Camp Claiborne after graduation in 1943 and at Camp Pontchartrian in 1944. My Vonnie and his Caroline were buddies during the Army training days. So, I would have written this yesterday except I was intent on a note to Doug. It's been a long time! Next, I'm amazed at the most gentlemanly reaction of Roland B. Fischer '42 in connection with the matter of one Doris Schwartzberg. Others of the dinosaur generation would not have been as charitable. Let me put it this way: When I was learning the verses of The Mining Engineer as a frosh in 1938, one verse puzzled me mightily-the one about the bridge and the shaft. But, let me assure you, with the passage of time all things become clear. For example-NASA has amply demonstrated that the bridge would have been far more economical. And, as far as the shaft-until now I could see no use for it. That is until I encountered the militantly feminist Mrs. Schwartzberg in the Mines Magazine. Now, there's a use for the shaft. Enuf Sed!
