One person dies at work in the mining capital of Western Australia every 14 days and this situation is slowly becoming worse. According to Freehills' employee relations consultant Greg Smith, this number used to be one death every 16 days. Speaking at this year's WA OSH Conference in Fremantle, Smith said as a lawyer, one of his frustrations when dealing with industry was the idea that legal compliance was nothing more than a backside-covering exercise. His message came just before the WA Government announced it would provide some 8 million dollars of additional monies to boost its resources safety division as well as implement a new regulatory framework for mining safety based on the recommendations of a recent report.
