NEWS HAS BEEN remarkably quiet about developments vis-a-vis minerals in what global mining entrepreneur Robert Friedland has called "the land of endless strings of camels". The US-born Friedland was, of course, referring to Mongolia, where his company Ivanhoe Mines Ltd has a major copper-gold joint venture (Oyu Tolgoi in the southern Gobi Desert) with publicly-listed resources giant Rio Tinto.
