Success where others fail

It has long been acknowledged that one missing link in the Australian minerals sector has been its ability to significantly value-add to its products. During the past 10 years, a number of major downstream processing projects in the country have started up - and failed. The reasons for this have been varied, but the usually high (and unexpected) production costs, the inability to come to grips with the required technologies for such undertakings as well as (before 2003 at least) depressed commodity prices.
