Titan Resources Limited is keen to shed the stigma of its disappointing Armstrong mine, from which WMC Resources refused to accept ore for its Kambalda nickel concentrator in December last year. Titan purchased the Armstrong deposit from WMC as part of the North Widgiemooltha tenements in September 2001 and outlined a mineable reserve of more than 465,000 tonnes of nickel over a three-year mine life, initially from an open cut followed by an underground mining operation. After delivering its first parcel of about 1,500t at a nickel grade of 1.8 percent nickel to WMC in October last year, the material was rejected due to unacceptable levels of non-sulphide nickel. Subsequently, it was found that the iron and magnesium oxide criteria required under the purchase agreement could not be met, and ore in the open pit was deemed unsuitable for processing.
