Grinding technology being developed in Australia and used by the international minerals sector has the potential to play an increasingly important role in the production of cement. Current global consumption of cement is sitting at 1.5 billion tonnes per annum and increasing at a yearly rate by about 1 percent. Electrical energy consumed in its production is around 110 kilowatts/tonne, with 40 percent of this needed during clinker grinding. According to Queensland-based Dr Alex Jankovic of Metso Minerals Process Technology (Asia-Pacific), there is plenty of potential to optimise conventional cement clinker grinding circuits. Furthermore, during the past decade, some significant progress in this area has been achieved. The increasing demand for finer cement products coupled with the need for a reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions--Dr Jankovic explained - reinforced the need for grinding optimisation.
