In the second half of May, Federal Opposition Treasurer Joe Hockey put one of the stranger aspects of the proposed resources super profits tax (RSPT) under the spotlight during a sitting of the House of Representatives in Canberra. The outspoken Hockey - who overnight become one of the most vocal champions of the Australian minerals sector as part of the nation-wide protest against the mooted impost emphasised the fact that the new legislation would not only see a milking of the domestic mining sector by the Commonwealth, but was also looking to make the taxpayer help underwrite failed projects.
