AUS-BASED GEOLOGICAL consultant is continuing to look into the possibility of using salt tectonic features to help find new mineral deposits within the world's great Proterozoic rift basins. Former vice president of exploration for BHP, Oliver Warin, is refining what he calls predictive targeting in the hope of being able to outline small areas (say, 10 by 10 kilometres or less) where there was a good (50 percent) chance that mineral bodies may exist. In particular, Warin is hoping to be able to identify targets of a manageable size for lead/ zinc stratiform copper and/or breccia-hosted iron oxide/copper-gold mineralisation which could then be tackled by a detailed geochemieal or geophysical surveys.
