Uncertainty fuels concerns

While Indonesia's Government is keen to attract another wave of foreign investment via refurbished mining legislation, there seem to be enough grey areas in the revised laws that have the potential to give international mineral proponents a headache or two. The Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono-led administration is currently in the process of finalising a new mining framework which - in theory - should respect both the State constitution and the principles of sustainable development. As part of this legal update, the south east Asian country is looking to implement a national coal policy, where the emphasis will be on securing the availability and supply of coal for domestic use and, in the long-term, export.
