Publicly-listed Rio Tinto is fully aware that language diversity in English-speaking Australian mining businesses has significant impacts on the recruitment, training and retention of employees. That is why the company, at its Weipa bauxite operations in northern Queensland, has devised a language policy that has provided a foundation for organisational improyement in these areas-particularly for its indigenous workers. Speaking during a recent Minerals Council of Australia conference on sustainable development in Western Australia, Comalco Ltds Matthew Wrigley said it was important for operations; to move beyond the usual broad statements of ethics and principles, and try to understand what they meant at a specific site, where distinct cultures could mean they were applied quite differently.
