The status of thermospray sample introduction for analytical atomic spectrometry is reviewed beginningwith description ofgeneral principles an doperationa characteristics of thermospray.The influence of important operational parameters,such as the operatingtemperature,spray chamber and desolvation system deskign,capillary internal diameter,andsample flow rate are described with respect to analyticalparameters suchas sensitivity,limits-of-detection,andaccuracy for inductively-coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry andinductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry.Developements in the use of thermospray with flame and graphite furnace atomic absorption are also summarized.Applications of these thermospray mehtods are then discussed,with partieular focus on mehtods for metal speciation,including thedescription of new methods with utilize thermospray as a high temperature,high pressure chemcial reactor for direct speciation of metals such as selenium and chromium.
