Successfully portraying animals isn't as easy as it looks. The artist has to dodge the pitfalls of photographic naturalism, sentimentality, cartooning or becoming so abstract that the animal's character has either been lost or changed beyond all recognition. The bi-continental British sculptor Thomas Hill creates menageries of birds and animals that not only escape these dangers but are endowed with a particular charm and insight. They resonate with the nature-lover in all of us because in a thoughtful, loving and disciplined way, Hill has captured what we most value as the essence of the particular creature.
