This text was abstracted from a transcript of "The Language of Jewelry: An Artist Panel Discussion," hosted by Tacoma Art Museum in June 2005 and held in conjunction with the exhibitions "Zero Karat: Jewelry in Non-Precious Materials from the Museum of Arts & Design" and "Beyond the Body: Northwest Jewelers at Play." The panel was convened by Susan Cummins, who also served as moderator. The five artists-Lisa Gralnick, Keith Lewis, Bruce Metcalf, Kiff Slemmons, and Sondra Sherman-were part of an exhibition curated by Cummins in 2000 called "Beyond the Obvious: Rethinking Jewelry." The questions the panelists were asked to respond to included: Why have you as an artist chosen jewelry as your medium of expression? What makes you particularly interested in this format? Why should collectors of your jewelry want to wear your personal expression? When you're looking at jewelry, how do you decide what value it has for you personally? An abridged version of their responses to these questions is reprinted in this Forum.
