U.S. Order for Machine Tools Continue year-on-Year Advance

Orders for new machine tools reported under the U.I Tool Consumption program of the distributors' organization and the AMT came to 257.4-million dollars in April, down 8 percent from March but up 29 percent from the level in April 2004. Year-to-date, 2005 orders stand at 969.4-million dollars, or 19 percent ahead of 2004. The statistics, reported by distributor and build erparticipants in the USMTC program, traditionally are thought to represent three-quarters of the U.S. market in new machine tools. The continued impressive increases in investment, remarks AMT president John B. Byrd III, "demonstrate that industry recognizes the need to invest in productivity-enhancing technologies in order to remain competitive."
