O-M Launches an Investment Spurt

O-M Ltd. (Osaka, Japan), best known for its large vertical-spindle lathes, has disclosed what its new top executive calls "our largest-ever capital spending"-a three-year 1.7-billion yen (14.78-million dollars) program designed to generally improve its Na-gaoka, Niigata Prefecture, works for machine tools. The plans call for O-M to carry out minor projects, including floor layout changes for parts assembling, simplification of product assembling and logistics, by March 2006. The lion's share of investment, 6.95-million dollars, is slated for later in 2006, when O-M plans to buy and install an undisclosed number of large production equipment, such as boring and five-surface machines as well as column-type surface grinders. The company also plans to start in-house production of many parts, while spending another 2.60-million dollars on environmental improvement, including purification of waste water generated from coating operation. In 2007, the company intends to install several relatively small machines.
