Besides wanting to protect the workforce, the vital asset in the metalworking sector; there is an economic need for employers to focus much more closely on the costs of accidents and ill-health. GOOD health and safety practices are vital in any type of work - and the immediate hazards faced by those employed in metal cutting and forming may appear obvious because of the complex and potentially dangerous equipment involved. Electricity, pressure Systems and toxic's health and safety scenario and yet in reality its accident and ill-health experiences are unlikely to be very different from other areas of work. Musculoskeletal disorders, slips and trips, manual handling problems and stress are likely to be the bigger causes of days lost from work if records are examined closely. Also, there are problems to be faced such as occupational deafness resulting from excessive noise, skin care to prevent dermatitis and the control of vibration - a subject currently being consulted on by the Health and Safety Executive.
