Optimisation of the VOD process in the Baildon steelworks

The oxiding reactions of carbon and chromium are most important in treating high-chromium steels in secondary metallurgy facilities. Research is centred on these reactions with the aim of improving production economy. Under these aspects, the VOD process in Baildon steelworks was investigated. A measuring system based on the mass spectrometer technique and a computer system were incorporated for the purpose of assisting process management and control. The necessary measuring system and a mathematical model of the process were developed by Mannesmann Demag Huttentechnik. This has led to a considerable decrease in the consumption of reducing agents and process gas, in treatment time and, therefore, to a general improvement in the economy of the VOD process.
