First of all, a look into the past: What are the roots of mechatronics? In the mid-1970s, the use of microprocessors to control machines was referred to in Japan as mechatronics. Today, this term has a wider meaning although there is no clear-cut definition, for this branch of engineering is still undergoing many changes. Generally speaking, mechatronics refers to the combining of mechanical, electronic and data-processing components. In this respect SMS Demag are a typical example of the use of mechatronics since combinations like these are part of the company's basic services.
