Whereas the international financial world is held spellbound by the occurrence and announcement of new mergers and acquisitions, the steel industry is getting ready for the top events in the field of metallurgical technology scheduled for the first half of 2006. Immediately ahead of us is the China International Steel Congress, taking place in Beijing in the middle of April. The Congress will be accompanied by the 10th International Metallurgical Industry Expo - Metallurgy China trade fair. Several thousand visitors are expected to attend or participate in these events - not only officials and managers of the huge Chinese steel companies, but also high-ranking representatives of the international steel industry and steel industry suppliers. The Congress does not limit itself to the main trends in the Chinese steel industry, but will also highlight topics such as the economic and ecological conditions under which the growth of the steel industry in China will take place in the next few years. Beijing is therefore an ideal meeting point, if not a not-to-be-missed event, for all participating in the development of the Chinese steel industry. Shortly afterwards - in early May - the North American steel industry will meet at Cleveland, Ohio/USA for AISTech - Iron and Steel Technology Conference and Exposition. The organizers have somewhat streamlined the program this year. This will make orientation again a bit easier and more convenient for the visitors. Although the Exposition is one day shorter this time, AISTech will again be the top event of the year for the North American steel industry. Suppliers to the steel industry have been noticing a revival of investment activities in the USA. AISTech 2006 will be a mirror of this phenomenon and show whether it is only of a short-term nature or a profound upswing of the steel industry in the NAFTA region.
