There was no intent to hide the utilitarian function of the new Service Building for the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center. The concentration was instead on making the heavy-duty industrial building an elegant and understated addition to its rather affluent surroundings. That was accomplished by combining a number of products on the building's exterior, including stainless steel mesh curtains and extruded aluminum louvers. Completed in April 2004, the 103,000 sq. ft. Kaiser Permanente service building is essentially a five-story building in what appears to be a three-story concrete shell. Prior to its construction, the hospital's backup generators, chillers, boilers and receiving dock were all located inside the hospital. The move off-site was just one element of complicated, multi-phased improvements scheduled at the one-million-sq.-ft. medical facility.
