The 23,500 sq. ft. Artists For Humanity EpiCenter is a studio and gallery for high school-aged students interested in exploring the arts. It contains commercial studio space, a gallery and offices, allowing students to explore their interests in painting, photography, sculpture, silkscreening and graphic design. The urban infill site chosen for the building required environmental remediation. It had street frontage at both the back and front and zero-lot-line conditions on both sides. To complicate matters further, the lot sloped downward 9' from the front to the back. Given these factors and the need for economy both initially and in the long run, the architect designed the building as a simple box covered with corrugated stainless steel panels.
